KUU Re-Signs Homegrown Half-Pipe Talent
KUUsport Mfg. Ltd., has recently re-signed sponsorship agreements with Canadian National Snowboard Team members Brad Martin and Dan Raymond that will see both riding on KUU’s MACH Series of Waxes again for the 07/08 season.
Brad has been one of the strongest members of the Canadian National Team over the past few years and continues to show that his ridding is going to the next level. With multiple medals at the World Cup Level and a Bronze and the 2007 World Snowboard Championship in his trophy case, he has added the 1260 to his bag to tricks to keep him at the top. Brad can be seen in numerous events around North America including the US Open, X-Games, Empire Shakedown, the Whistler World Ski & Snowboard Invitational and even riding outside the pipe in a few videos that will be released this winter.
Dan has multiple years of experience on the World Cup Circuit and is looking forward to this season riding with KUU. He will be coming into 07/08 healthy after struggling with a few injuries last season, including a separated shoulder. Dan, who is an avid tuner and waxing junkie, takes great pride is his amplitude and his smooth style in the pipe. With two World Cup Half-Pipe events in Canada this season (Calgary, AB & Stoneham, QC), Dan is looking towards standing on the podium in front of the home crowd.
Ron Kuus, president of KUUsport says, “We are proud to have re-signed with both Brad and Dan. I think both riders are poised to have tremendous seasons this year and I look forward to seeing them stand on the podium at many different events.” He goes on to say, “KUU being the first snowboard specific wax, tools, and accessory company in the world, remains strongly committed to those exceptional athletes that are determined to make it to the top.”

KUU Athletes Rack Up Record-Breaking Seasons on Snow
March 24, 2006 (Toronto, Ontario.)
It's official! On the strength of career seasons from KUU athletes Thomas Grandi and Erik Guay, the Canadian men's alpine ski team has recorded its best ever finish in the FIS Nations Cup. Aided by his career-high 5 podiums, Grandi amassed 614 World Cup points for Canada's best ever individual technical tally. Guay, despite missing the season's final four speed races, wasn't far behind at 435. Mirroring his technical partner's relentless rise and with 3 World Cup podiums of his own this season, speed specialist Erik Guay has now improved his points in each one of his four seasons on the elite circuit.
The competition boarding season is also a wrap, with KUU rider Brad Martin (Ancaster, ON) finishing 5th overall in the World Cup half-pipe standings. Highlights included his first-ever World Cup podium (Whistler) and competing in the Olympics in Turin where he narrowly missed the finals. Fellow KUU rider Dan Raymond (Whistler, BC) picked up 3 top-ten World Cup finishes in the half-pipe and won a Nor-Am event in January.
KUU President Ron Kuus is justifiably impressed. "Obviously we are thrilled to be supplying all of our elite athletes with what we believe are state-of-the-art products, including our highly regarded Mach III wax. We are all happy to see our athletes having record career seasons and we look forward to next year." KUU is an Official Supplier to both Alpine Canada Alpin and the Canadian Snowboard Federation.
The 2006 Honda Pro-Am Snowboard Tour - MACH III Strikes Gold in the Half Pipe!
February 1, 2006, Once again MACH III shows it versatility by taking another medal in the Snowboard Halfpipe. KUU Team Rider, Dan Raymond, took top spot on the most recent stop on the 2006 Honda Pro-Am Tour which took place at Big White (details bellow). "I had a good weekend at Big White...once again the Mach 3 worked great; I used the green on the edges and orange (no fluoro) in the middle for the dry snow and ice. It was only -7 or so but my gamble paid off" said Raymond who has been going big all season with the MACH Series of waxes.
"We know that the flexibility of the MACH waxes have been proven this year with its success in multiple disciplines" commented company president Ron Kuus. "Not only has this season been such a great break out year for the MACH III in the Alpine/Nordic side for KUU with us signing up with the Austria Ski Team and the continued support of Alpine Canada Alpin but, the results on the Snowboard side have just been as big. Continuing with our support for the Canadian Snowboard Federation and our Team Riders the MACH waxes has been helping riders in the Half Pipe, SBX, and even in the gates with the GS." Dan Raymond and the other members of the CSF are now off to Torino and we would like to wish all the athletes good luck!

The Canadians - An Alpine Ski Team Changed by Speed

December 20, 2005 (Toronto, Ontario.) Canadian men, apparently feasting on the speed, seemed to populate World Cup podiums at will this past weekend. On Friday and Saturday in Val Gardena, Mont Tremblant's Erik Guay viewed extreme race conditions as an opportunity rather than an obstacle. Guay tore up the track in the Super G to finish with Silver and continued fly high by taking a Bronze in the Downhill. On Sunday Francois Bourque was the next to grab World Cup hardware by taking a Bronze in the GS in Alta Badia, Italy.
"SPEED CHANGES YOU." This simple tag-line belonging to KUU, Canada's premier manufacturer of competition waxes and precision tuning tools, might just as easily describe the recent transformation of the men's Canadian Alpine Ski Team. KUU is an official supplier to Alpine Canada Alpin and according to KUU president Ron Kuus, the change they've undergone in the past few seasons is remarkable. "The Team finished the 2002 World Cup with 243 points. Contrast that with this season's running total of 804 points (with well over half the races to come,) and you begin to understand the magnitude of what they are achieving - it's nothing short of spectacular."
"Obviously we are thrilled to be supplying them with what we believe is state-of-the-art product, including our highly regarded Mach III wax. That they are coincidentally enjoying their best season in 23 years is especially exciting" concluded Ron. KUU is the Canadian manufacturer and distributor of waxes, precision tuning tools and accessories for alpine skiing, nordic skiing and snowboarding.
Ski Racing Powerhouse Taps KUU for Race Wax & Tuning Tools
INNSBRUCK , AUSTRIA . June 22, 2005 . KUU, the Canadian manufacturer of competition race waxes and precision tuning equipment, has been named an “Official Supplier” to the Austrian National Ski Team. The status was conferred on KUU in an agreement signed earlier this month and applies to both Austria’s world famous Alpine team as well as its accomplished Nordic team. The immediate effect of the signing is that KUU’s bullet-quick MACH series wax and tuning accessories become part of the Austrian team’s equipment for the upcoming 2005/2006 World Cup season.
This is the freshest in a series of agreements KUU has inked with national ski and snowboard organizations in Canada and abroad. Interest in their product line has intensified following testing of the latest generation of KUU’s Mach series wax, the Mach III. According to Reinhold Zitz, the Austrian team’s Pool Manager, “obviously we are impressed with KUU products overall, but we especially like the flexibility of the Mach III – it performs well over a surprisingly large temperature range and that is a key advantage in ski racing.”
Commenting on the most recent arrival to the KUU client roster, company president Ron Kuus advised “we are thrilled that Austria has selected our products for their team equipment pool. At our end we think we make the world’s fastest race waxes, a view that may have obtained its latest validation this week from the world’s dominant ski power.”

KUU “Top Guns” Thomas Grandi & Erik Guay Start the Season With a Bang
December 21, 2004 (Toronto, Ontario) KUU, manufacturer of competition waxes and tools for 18 years and official supplier to the Canadian Alpine Ski Team, is delighted to announce sponsorships of this country's top two male skiers, Thomas Grandi and Erik Guay, as of November 15 and December 15 respectively. "We are
thrilled to have Thomas and Erik racing under our banner" commented KUU President Ron Kuus. "Their dedication, athleticism and success is ushering in a
phenomenal new era in alpine ski racing in Canada. KUU is proud to be supporting them with precision ski tuning tools and our bullet-quick Mach III race waxes."
Since reaching the new sponsorship agreements, there has been little reciprocal talk
but plenty of action from the two most prominent users of the KUU product. Earlier this week in Val Gardena, inspiration triumphed over injury when Guay wired his best World Cup result of the season on a course that only a year ago sent him to the hospital on a stretcher. In just his fifth downhill back since that crash and the knee surgery that resulted, Erik was barely a second behind the winner. The 11th place finish has vaulted him into14th place in the overall downhill standings.
In the four World Cup GS races since commencement of his own KUU sponsorship, Thomas Grandi's media profile has shot from relative anonymity to front page glory. Starting modestly with a 13th in Beaver Creek USA then an 11th in Val D'Isere France, on Sunday in Italy Thomas became the 1st ever Canadian male alpine skier to win a World Cup technical event with a GS victory on the treacherous Alta Badia piste. Unbelievably, this morning in Austria he made it back-to-back triumphs by capturing the Flachau GS. With this 2nd win right in the hometown of Austrian skiing titan Hermann Maier, Thomas now leads the overall World Cup GS standings ahead of both "the Herminator" and American wunderkind Bode Miller.
Until Grandi, no Canadian skier had won back-to-back World Cup races since Steve Podborski's 1980/81 campaign. Asked to comment on the coincidence of Erik's improved and Thomas's stunning results immediately following the commencement of their sponsorships, Ron Kuus advised "these results speak volumes for both Erik and Thomas. However I personally spent too many years in race boots of my own to attribute their success to anything other than determination, skill and discipline. Having said that, we all know how important it is to have perfectly tuned equipment. And access to arguably the world's fastest race waxes doesn't hurt either. Let's just say I'm stoked that Erik and Thomas's technicians have our equipment to use, our advice at all times, and our new Mach III wax series on their tuning benches." In a previous statement, KUU advised that Mach III will be available to non-World Cup racers in advance of the 2005-2006 ski season.

THOMAS GRANDI REPEATS WORLD CUP GS VICTORY IN AUSTRIA
" To replicate success, over and over;
That is the true sign of a champion."
- Ken Read, Alpine Canada Alpin President
Thomas Grandi was very happy after his "Grand" achievement!
FLACHAU (Italy), December 21, 2005 - Canada's Thomas Grandi tallied his second win in three days, stringing together giant slaloms in Alta Badia on Sunday and Flachau on Tuesday to score the only two wins of his World Cup career. After becoming the first Canadian man to win a World Cup technical event on Sunday, Grandi exceeded all expectations by winning Tuesday's GS held in Flachau (AUT). An incredulous Grandi held off Didier Cuche (SUI) and Bode Miller (USA), in second and third respectively.
"Alta Badia was an emotional victory because it was my first and I had waited so long for it, explained Grandi. "Today, I was on a roll. I felt so natural and relaxed and I had a lot of confidence. It's like a dream come true!," said the new overall leader of the giant slalom World Cup standings.
Last season's champion Bode Miller of the United States moved up from seventh after the first leg to finish third overall, 1.10 seconds behind Grandi.
Austria's overall World Cup champion and Flachau's hometown hero, Hermann Maier, was 11th in the first run. Setting a fast time at the top of the second leg, Maier fell during the second race, carrying on and finishing 9.59 seconds off the pace.
Cuche, who finished third with Maier in the Alta Badia race, was in the lead today after the first leg. He was set to give Switzerland their first victory of the season, especially skiing a second course set by a Swiss trainer.
But Grandi skied a superb second run winning the second run by 34 hundredths of a second.
After skiing a superb second run, the Canmore resident threw himself backwards into the safety netting with a huge grin on his face. He anxiously waited for Cuche to come down the icy course to see if his second run lead would be sufficient for gold.
"This is amazing, what is happening to me," said the 31-year-old Grandi who is the first Canadian man in World Cup history to win technical events. It is exciting to showcase my sport, to get a strong following, develop a strong team and a good feeder system of young athletes. This is just the tip of the iceberg," added the skier who will celebrate his birthday on December 27 with his family in Canada.
"I have had to wait for a long time but now that I have everything in my hands I am not going to let it go." These results continue to build a team momentum and while the impact outside of our sport has yet to be seen, it creates excitement about ski racing and builds upon the dreams of the young, aspiring racers", told Grandi Tuesday from his hotel in Europe, as he prepared for his final slalom race tomorrow.
Alpine Canada Alpin President Ken Read, said " Canada hasn't seen a back to back World Cup win in over 20 years, surely out of all the events in winter sport, GS and super-G are the hardest to win. You have got to be perfect to win a back to back race," admitted Read. " This is truly a 'state of grace', but to maintain that is the biggest challenge. You have to keep doing what you are doing right."
Previous Canadian back-to-back wins on the World Cup include Ken Read in 1980 winning two consecutive downhill's in Wengen and Kitzbuhel, Steve Podborski in 1981 in the Kitzbuhel and Garmisch downhill's and Gerry Sorensen in 1982, winning two downhills in Grindelwald.
As for JP Roy, the 5th place finisher on Sunday, he was 21st today, making the points yet again.
Grandi will race slalom tomorrow in Austria, his final event before the Christmas break. He is confident that he has the winning feeling and can continue on his roll.
" I will go for it tomorrow. Although slalom is a different event from giant slalom, my nerves are calm and I feel confident. Anything can happen," concluded Grandi.

MORE Thomas Grandi Quotes:
"Alta Badia was an emotional victory because it was my first and I had waited so long for it. Today, I was on a roll, I felt so natural and relaxed and I had a lot of confidence, I skied amazing!"
" Technically and physically I had all the skills to win. The skis work best when you are relaxed and supple, when you can link up your turns."
" I wanted to keep skiing for Canada because I am proud to be a Canadian. The fact that there hadn't been a success here in a technical event drove me to be the first to stand on the podium."
" It is exciting to showcase my sport, to get a strong following, develop a strong team and a good feeder system of young athletes. This is just the tip of the iceberg."
" I believe in the progression. It starts with great split times in races and slowly, with each small success, you begin to believe in yourself and the success comes."
" These results continue to build a team momentum and while the impact outside of our sport has yet to be seen, it creates excitement about ski racing and builds upon the dreams of the young, aspiring racers."
"A lot of factors have to be in place for success; the right people, the right place and the right finances. Perfection builds on many, many years of having all of these things in place. "
" I will go for it tomorrow in the slalom. Although slalom is a different event than giant slalom, my nerves are calm and I feel confident. Anything can happen".
" Since Max has brought Terry Orlick, a sports psychologist on board, I have focused on my pre-race strategy. He believes I can win and it helps a lot to have someone with so much success working with athletes such as me. The mental preparation and belief in myself is paramount in my recent successes."
" Before the 2nd run today, I was nervous, starting 29th instead of 4th. Cuche got some time on me and the run was more challenging than the first. The sun had gone behind the mountain and the visibility was worse."
" My previous roll was on the Nor-Am circuit, I've watched so many guys on a roll, and always admired how relaxed they were."
" The reaction from the fans here in Europe is crazy. I saw some young kids with a sign that read, " Go Thomas Go" and it was really special. Sometimes it is nice to be at home where it is quieter, the attention can be a little overwhelming."
" These races have been close together so it is easy to keep the winning feeling. The biggest challenge will be when I am off, to come back with the same momentum."
MORE Ken Read Quotes:
" Out of all the events in winter sport, GS and super G are the hardest to win. You have got to be perfect to win a back to back race. It hasn't been done by a Canadian in over 20 years."
" This shows that the program is going in the right direction. We need to have the resources NOW to confirm to the sponsors and have the financial resources for 2010."
" We are building the sport momentum and the effect on the kids is profound. They believe in Canada and this sport and are energized by Thomas' success."
" This is truly a 'state of grace', but to maintain that is the biggest challenge. You have to keep doing what you are doing right."
" To replicate success, over and over, is the true sign of a champion."
" You have to be a good technician before you can be a good ski racer in any discipline."
" There has been a conditional approval of a technical event in Lake Louise on the World Cup Circuit next year. Nov. 27, 2005 for a Men's GS race. First, there needs to be a FIS GS race on the course and we need to meet the hill and environmental requirements." |
